Over the next couple of weeks we’re going to have a party! We are going to be learning about a celebration called ‘Chinese New Year’. Millions of people celebrate Chinese New Year. It will be marked by communities all over the world. People will eat lots of food, enjoy fireworks, wear special clothes and hang red lanterns to mark the occasion.

Every year is represented by a zodiac animal sign. 2021 is the Year of the Ox.

Here are some colouring sheets that you can print off .

The Great Race

Long ago, in China, the Jade Emperor thought he needed to find a way of keeping track of each year. He thought he should name every year after a different animal. But there were so many animals, the Jade Emperor could not decide which one should be first. So he decided to have a race to help him choose.


Can you order these numbers correctly on the dragon’s body? What number comes first, next? What is one more? One less? There are different levels of these games so you can make it harder when you’ve completed each one correctly.

Let’s celebrate

Design and make your very own Chinese dragon, using materials that you can find at home. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Dragon Dance

Now you have designed and made your dragon you are ready to perform your dragon dance! See if you can get your whole family to join in.


Chinese words are written using symbols instead of letters. Try and write some using a thick black pen or black paint. It’s a little bit tricky.

Don’t forget to practise your RWI sounds too and you will be amazing by the time we get back to school.
